La Batalla de Monterrey en el pincel de Gilbert Gaul

Hoy hace 154 años se libró la Batalla de Monterrey entre el ejército norteamericano y el mexicano. Después del triunfo norteamericano se exaltó la victoria con música y expresiones artísticas de toda la guerra. Un pintor notable de este tema y en general del tema bélico fue William Gilbert Gaul, destacado sobre todo por sus representaciones de la Guerra Civil norteamericana y combatiente él mismo.

GAUL, William Gilgert, artista, nació en Jersey City, N. J., el 31 de Marzo de 1855, hijo de George y Cornelia (Gilbert) Gaul, nieto de William y Almira (McKoun) Goul, bisnieto de Jacob Gaul, quien era residente de Ghent. N.Y. en 1750 y quien sirvió en la guerra revolucionaria. Fue educado en la escuela local de Newwark y en la Academia Militar de Claverack y comenzó sus estudios de arte en la ciudad de Nueva York con J. G. Brown. De noche estudió en la escuela académica a prueba L.E. Wilmarth, sobre organización de la Liga de Estudiantes de arte llegó a ser allí estudiante. En 1872 su primer cuadro fue expuesto en la Academia de Diseño. En 1877 abrió un estudio en la ciudad de Nueva York, donde pronto estableció su reputación para pinturas históricas y de ese género. Mientras Mr. Gaul ha elaborado otros temas con simpatía y candidez, es como pintor de batallas y la vida de los soldados como más ampliamente se le conoce. Ha hecho un estudio atento sobre todo lo concerniente a la carrera militar y sus sentimientos por composiciones dramáticas, su sonado entrenamiento académico y su destreza en representar agitadas escenas de acción han contribuido a su éxito. Muchas de sus obras representan los pintorescos elementos de la vida militar en planos del lejano Oeste. Ha ilustrado un gran número de libros y su trabajo en blanco y negro ha aparecido en las principales revistas. Su cuadro “Holding the Line at All Hazards” (Manteniendo la línea a todo riesgo) recibió una medalla de oro por parte de la Asociación Americana de Arte en 18881, mientras que por su emotiva obra “Charging the battery” (Cargando el cañón) ha sido electo como académico nacional en 1883 y fue premiado con una medalla en la exposición de París en 1889. Mr. Gaul fue miembro de la Sociedad Americana de Artistas, el Asociación Century y el Club Salmagundi, se casó primero el 30 de junio de 1880 con Susie A., hija de William T. GAUL, William Gilbert, artist, was born in Jersey City, N. J., Mar. 31, 1855, son of George and Cornelia (Gilbert) Gaul, grandson of William and Almira (McKoun) Gaul, great-grandson of Richard and Rebecca (Young) Gaul, and greatgreat-grandson of Jacob Gaul, who was a resident of Ghent. N. Y., in 1750 and who served in the revolutionary war. He was educated in the local schools of Newark and at the Claverack Military Academy, and began the study of art in New York city with J. G. Brown. At night he studied at the academy school under Prof! L. E. Wilmarth, and upon the organization of the Art Students' League became a student there. In 1872 his first picture was exhibited at the Academy of Design, n 1877 he opened a studio in New York city, where he soon established a reputation for historical and genre pictures. While Mr. Gaul has treated other subjects with sympathy and charm, it is as a painter of battles and soldier life that he is most widely known. He has made a close study of all that pertains to a military career, and his feeling for dramatic composition, Iiis sound academic training and his skill in depicting stirring scenes of action have each contributed to his success. Many of his paintings represent the picturesque features of army life on the plains of the far West. He has illustrated a number of books, and his work in black and white has appeared in all the leading magazines. The picture " Holding the Line at All Hazards " received a gold medal from the American Art Association in 1881, while for the spirited painting " Charging the Battery " he was elected a national academician in 1883 and was awarded a gold inedal at the Paris exposition of .1889. At the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 a medal was given him for his illustrations.
